Martin Leichtman, Ph. D. is a clinical psychologist with over forty years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. A member of the staff of the Menninger Clinic for three decades, he served as Chief Psychologist in the Child and Adolescent Service for twenty-two years, directed a residential treatment unit for eight years, and consulted to the Topeka Public Schools and community mental health centers. He served on the faculties of psychiatry, psychology, and social work training programs of the Menninger School of Mental Health Science, where he was named teacher of the year on a number of occasions. He is the author of The Rorschach: A Developmental Perspective and over fifty book chapters and articles on child development and the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology across the life cycle. He is currently in private practice at Responsive Centers for Psychology and Learning in Overland Park, Kansas.
OVERVIEW: Symptoms of ADHD are among the most common problems encountered in children and adolescents. This workshop will discuss ways of helping children and their families engage in and follow through with the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder.
OBJECTIVES: After attending this workshop, the participant will be able to describe:
• Standard approaches to the diagnosis of ADHD,
• Ways of presenting findings that help children and parents understand the disorder, make informed decisions about treatment, and carry through with them,
• Techniques for engaging children and families in practical, multi-faceted approaches to treatment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION: Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors. For licensed professionals, please bring license # to the workshop to receive your CEU Certificate of Attendance.
