Effective Diagnosis and Treatment for Betrayal Trauma: The Critical Need for Specialized Training

OVERVIEW:  Trauma training is imperative to therapists as they work with those who have been traumatized and want to heal. But does trauma training alone equip you to effectively diagnose and treat someone who has experienced betrayal trauma? Betrayal trauma is often experienced by individuals whose trust has been violated in an intimate relationship, typically as a result of their partner’s problematic sexual behaviors. The unique emotional and psychological wounds experienced when trust in a sexual relationship is broken requires specific knowledge and understanding on the part of a treating clinician.Using case vignettes, this presentation will walk participants through the process of distinguishing between betrayal, trauma, and betrayal trauma. Participants will learn about assessment tools that are helpful in identifying betrayal trauma, diagnostic criteria for an accurate diagnosis and its impact on the client, as well as treatment planning strategies that address the unique needs of betrayed partners. Finally, participants will be introduced to a variety of resources for training, as well as supplemental treatment support for clients experiencing betrayal trauma.

OBJECTIVES: After attending this Zoom webinar, the participant will:

• Have an understanding of the criteria met by the client to provide an accurate assessment and diagnosis,   
• Have knowledge and skills to differentiate between betrayal, trauma, and betrayal trauma, 
• Have knowledge and skills to accurately assess clients who are experiencing betrayal trauma,
• Be able to apply assessment information to effective treatment planning for the treatment of betrayal trauma.

This continuing education Zoom webinar is designed for case managers, social workers, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and health care workers.  The community is also invited to attend.

Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors.

In order to receive continuing education credit and a certificate of attendance for this Zoom webinar, you will be required to participate in the Zoom webinar. You will receive a Zoom invitation via email within a week of webinar. Also you will need to take an online exam and complete an evaluation that will be sent in a separate email after the live Zoom webinar. You must pass the test by 70%. The Zoom webinar will not be available by recording and viewing at any other time.
