Barbara Mares is the Area Director for the Greater Kansas Chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Being a mother to five sons is the greatest accomplishment in her life. It has also cultivated the most difficult journey of her life – having to say “good-bye” to not one but two of her sons due to suicide. Barbara has been trained as a Suicide Bereavement Support Group Facilitator facilitating Suicide Bereavement Support Groups for children and teens. She is a Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor. She is certified as a QPR Gatekeeper Instructor, Yellow Suicide Prevention Program Trainer, ASIST Trainer and Talk Save Lives/ Talk Saves Lives - Suicide Prevention Education for Workplace Settings Trainer. In September of 2012, she received the Missouri Suicide Prevention Project Award for Community work. In 2019, she received the Larry Guidry Sr Award for her hard work and dedication towards mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Her goal is to create a culture that’s smart about mental health through education and community programs, research and advocacy, and support for those affected by suicide. Her passion is this job!
Jeff Cardwell is a husband, father, and a grandfather. He is also a volunteer and Board Member for the Greater Kansas Chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He started his journey with AFSP 11 years ago after tragically losing his 27-year-old son, David, to suicide. As a suicide loss survivor, Jeff knew that he needed to do something to hopefully prevent another family from ever experiencing such a heartbreaking loss. His volunteer work allows him to give his son a voice and to share his personal journey in an effort to provide hope for others.
OVERVIEW: Talk Saves Lives provides a foundation that allows individuals to feel more confident about reaching out to those who may be struggling. Not only does TSL provide research driven facts for the program itself but shares with individuals some of the warning signs that individuals may display and how to reach out and be that steppingstone of hope. This is the basis for the name of the program, Talk Saves Lives.
