OVERVIEW: In clinical practice Panic Attacks and Health Anxiety are often undertreated despite this being a condition which affects a great number of individuals who are seen by mental health professionals and which can present either as primary diagnoses or as co-occurring diagnostic issues with other anxiety disorders or mood disorders. Often panic attacks are poorly understood and more importantly the client’s understanding of what a panic attack is and how it develops is not facilitated in treatment. Similarly, health anxiety or illness anxiety disorder are often poorly understood and undertreated.
This training will provide a clear conceptualization using the CBT model of both panic disorder and health anxiety/illness anxiety disorder. Strategies to assist clinicians in assessing these conditions will be described and case examples provided. An overview of treatment goals and the treatment approach will be outlined. Specific evidence-based interventions will be described and demonstrated using case examples. Helpful handouts and worksheets to assist interventions will be included and described. Commonly encountered problems which may arise in treating these individuals will also be discussed.
