Dr. Tyler Staples is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology and Kansas City University and Licensed Psychologist in Kansas and Missouri. He received his undergraduate education in biology and psychology at the University of Kansas in 2009 and his master’s degree in counseling psychology at Avila University in 2012. After teaching and practicing as a Licensed Masters Level Psychologist in Kansas for 7 years, he returned to the classroom and earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Kansas City University in 2023. His doctoral training included emphasis on clinical child psychology and neurodevelopmental assessment, as well as assessment and treatment using a health psychology lens. Dr. Staples currently specializes in psychological assessment for neurodevelopmental disorders in children, teens, and young adults, and clinical therapy with teens and young adults experiencing anxiety and depressive disorders, which often includes sleep disorders and other parasomnias. Dr. Staples was formally trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with further training in other evidence-based therapies.
OVERVIEW: Sleep disturbances in childhood are common, impairing, and frequently under-identified. This presentation reviews the assessment and differential diagnosis of pediatric sleep disorders, including behavioral insomnia of childhood, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, restless legs syndrome, and sleep-disordered breathing. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing developmentally normative sleep patterns from clinically significant pathology, conducting efficient and evidence-based evaluations, and understanding the interplay between sleep, neurodevelopmental conditions, mood, and behavior. Participants will also review current best practices in clinical interventions.

This continuing education Zoom webinar is designed for case managers, social workers, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and health care workers. The community is also invited to attend.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors.
In order to receive continuing education credit and a certificate of attendance for this Zoom webinar, you will be required to participate in the Zoom webinar. You will receive a Zoom invitation via email within a week of webinar. Also you will need to take an online exam and complete an evaluation that will be sent in a separate email after the live Zoom webinar. You must pass the test by 70%. The Zoom webinar will not be available by recording and viewing at any other time.
