Tad B. Coles, DVM, CPS, CCFP is a veterinarian and is certified as a Peer Specialist (CPS) by the state of Missouri and a Compassion Fatigue Professional (CCFP) by the International Association of Trauma Professionals. His experience includes 28 years of continuous personal recovery from substance use disorder. For 22 years he worked as a Group Facilitator for a non-profit, confidential organization that monitors health-care professionals recovering from addiction or other impairment and reports to their licensing board. Dr. Coles founded Compassion Fatigue Coach in 2016. Using the tools he learned to help others with compassion fatigue, burnout, substance use disorder enabled him to return to clinical practice after decades of working in the veterinary industry. Since 2017, he has been the medical director of Two Dogs and A Cat Pet Club in Overland Park, Kansas. He gives presentations to veterinary and human treatment centers, clinics, hospitals, and professional organizations.
OVERVIEW:
The greater the patient load and the more patients and clients we see with trauma, especially trauma that is similar to the trauma we've personally been touched by, the greater our susceptibility to compassion fatigue. Being placed in workload, control, fairness and other mismatch situations increases our susceptibility to burnout, especially if our ethics our challenged. We'll review some documented tools that can help us face and bounce back from these challenges.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This continuing education workshop is designed for case managers, social workers, psychologists, therapists, nurses, counselors, and health care workers. Those who are interested in learning more about compassion fatigue and professional burnout are also invited to attend.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 1.5 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors. For licensed professionals, please bring license # to the workshop to receive your CEU Certificate of Attendance.
