Dr. Jeff Peterson, PhD, LCPC, LPC, NCC, PCC is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, counselor supervisor, and assistant professor in the School of Education and Counseling at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Prior to this, he taught at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri; and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Dr. Peterson currently serves on the editorial review board for the American Counseling Association’s Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling.
He is a Chi Sigma Iota counseling honor society faculty advisor, which focuses on promoting the development of future leaders in mental health care. He has also been heavily involved in promoting multicultural inclusivity and advocacy within the classroom and community. Over the past year, Dr. Peterson served as a faculty mentor for the QUAD Innovation Alliance, a joint-university collaboration between the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado College, and the University of Colorado, developing best practices for in-school suicide prevention, intervention, and treatment planning.
OVERVIEW: Participants will learn how to better serve the needs of sexual and gender minorities in a clinical setting. Participants will learn how to reduce the risk of committing microaggresions, which can deter LGBTQ individuals from seeking mental healthcare; develop a deeper understanding of challenges surrounding intersecting identities, alternative families, and unique relationship constellations; and practice the skill of critically reflecting on one's own social ecology and layers of identity. Participants will also learn about the significant shift over the past couple of years in language surrounding sexual and gender identities.
OBJECTIVES: As a result of attending this webinar, the participant will be able to:
• Explore shifts in terminology and differentiation between sexual orientation & gender identity,
• Critically reflect on one’s own social ecology,
,• Discuss how to reduce potential microaggressions in a clinical setting,
• Develop a deeper understanding of challenges faced by those in alternative families or with intersecting identities.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This continuing education zoom webinar is designed for case managers, social workers, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and health care workers. The community is welcome to attend.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors.
In order to receive continuing education credit and a certificate of attendance for this zoom webinar, you will be required to participate in the live zoom webinar. You will receive a zoom invitation via email within a week of webinar. Also you will need to take an online exam and complete an evaluation that will be sent in a separate email after the live zoom webinar. You must pass the test by 70%. The zoom webinar will not be available by recording and viewing at any other time.
