Tad B. Coles, DVM, CPS, CCFP has been certified as a Peer Specialist and a Compassion Fatigue Professional since 2016 when he founded Compassion Fatigue Coach. His experience includes practice ownership for 8 years, leaving practice after experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout, working in a variety of industry positions, and 29 years of continuous personal recovery from substance use disorder. For 22 years he worked as a Group Facilitator for a non-profit, confidential organization that monitors health-care professionals recovering from addiction or other impairment and reports to their licensing board. Using tools he learned to help others enabled him to return to clinical practice full time. He has served in a variety of positions in organized veterinary medicine including volunteering for both the Kansas and Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Wellbeing Task Forces.
OVERVIEW:
The greater the patient load, the more patients and clients we see with trauma, especially trauma that is similar to the trauma we've personally faced, the greater our susceptibility to burnout and compassion fatigue. Being placed in workload, control, fairness and other mismatch situations increases our susceptibility to burnout, especially if our ethics are challenged. We'll review some documented tools to help us face and bounce back from these challenges.
