Gayle Taylor-Ford LSCSW, LCAC, is a licensed social worker and addictions counselor who has worked with people with brain injury in the community since 2003. Her business, Therapy Services, provides home and community based cognitive and behavioral therapy and non –medical transportation to individuals on the Kansas TBI waiver.
OVERVIEW: After a moderate to severe brain injury, survivors often look ‘normal,’ but they and those closest to them (spouse, family, co-workers) realize ‘something isn’t right.’ The person may have been a high-functioning manager before, but now lacks initiation, is disorganized and unable to concentrate, and may act impulsively or inappropriately - especially when frustrated. Is it depression? Anxiety? Cognitive dysfunction due to a forgotten brain injury? Or any/all of the above?
OBJECTIVES: As a result of attending this workshop, the participant will be able to describe:
• Main causes and types of brain injury
• Symptoms of diagnosed and undiagnosed brain injury
• Effective cognitive and behavioral interventions for people with brain injury
• Missouri and Kansas programs for people with traumatic brain injury
