Zoom Webinar
Registration Fee: $25
Dr. Rebecca Lepping is an Assistant Professor of Neurology in the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Director of the Power Of Music (PROMUS) lab, and Advisory Group Member of the Kansas City Community NeuroArts Coalition. She is a cognitive neuroscientist (Ph.D.), musician (M.A.), and music psychologist (M.A.) who is passionate about the power of music to affect us, improve our well-being, and make our lives better. Her PROMUS lab research examines the links between music and mental health, music and pain, music and lung health, and music and Alzheimer’s disease with a body/mind/brain approach. Dr. Lepping and her research team combine rigorous scientific methodology, medical imaging techniques (MRI, PET, CT, EEG), and music theory in their research to investigate how music impacts human physiology, psychology, and well-being.
OVERVIEW: Music therapy is an effective treatment for depression and people experiencing depression often report using music to regulate their mood and cope with symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, variability in symptom profiles and music-related experiences, as well as variability in music interventions themselves make it challenging for clinicians to incorporate empirically supported music interventions into their practice. Our ambition is to understand the underlying neurocognitive and physiological mechanisms by which music impacts mental health. We will describe how emotional music is processed in the brain and how this may be useful in creating effective, targeted treatments for depression.
